The Decmatic Interview: Michael Marriott

Category: Support Independents

Michael Marriott is one of the most interesting designers working in the UK right now. He works across a range disciplines from product design through interiors to jewellery. His webshop, Wood Metal Plastic, features his own products - and those of other designers and brands - that exemplify his pared back approach and focus on functionality.

I sat down with him recently to quiz him on The Four Diktats. True to character, his answers were often surprising, always interesting and sometimes a little cheeky.

Before pressing record, we talked about his work with the National Trust for 2 Willow Road, his love of jars and his dislike of the 9€ IKEA coffee table, an antidote to which he suggests in one of his answers below.

DIKTAT No.1: INVEST IN QUALITY THAT LASTS

DIKTAT No.2: Buy Secondhand

What do you gravitate towards at the flea market? What’s in your eBay saved searches?

DIKTAT No.3: Make It Yourself

DIKTAT No.4: Support Independents

Tell us about some other independent makers and creators you think deserve support.

That’s it, the first Decmatic Interview. Do let me know of anyone you would be interested in hearing from in future interviews. Just drop a comment below.

In the meantime, here are some links for the brands and individuals that Michael mentioned:
