Category: Buy Secondhand
A follower on Instagram asked for recommendations for secondhand sofas. Here’s what I’ve found on eBay.
£500 and under
(Nearly) everyone loves a bit of mid-century elegance so here are a few options, starting wth this handsome blue thing.
How about a bit of beat up leather? That worn in look is something you can’t buy new and this tan leather three-seater is definitely not new. Looks great nonetheless.
There’s something similar here. And a cheaper one here.
And if you want a real budget option, how about this beauty from Habitat? Admittedly, the back cushions look super saggy but with a bit of restuffing, this could be a real bargain.
This sofa-slash-day-bed is gorgeous. Throw some soft cushions on it and it might even be comfortable.
It feels remiss to not include something from IKEA. I like the look of this chaise longue/corner sofa, possibly because I have something very similar According to the listing, you can put the chaise longe on either end making this a super flexible option. I like. (EDIT: this is the one I have. At £90, this looks like a steal. I would check that the photos are of the actual sofa they’re selling.)
For a totally different direction, this George V style sofa caught me eye. I know nothing about the period but the bones of this piece intrigue me. I suspect that with a bit of TLC and a reupholster this could be lovely. (Apparently, the cushions are a nice shade of green but the photos - or perhaps my eyes - tell a different story.)
up to a £1000
Prefer a more country-manor-slash-gentleman’s-club vibe? Then how about a Chesterfield? Here’s one in olive green. (I love how they’ve included an apple in the photos so you know what size the sofa is.)
For comparison, here’s one in dark green that you could probaly get for £200 if you make an offer.
The Robin Day Forum sofa I mentioned in last week’s Habitat edition of eBaywatch is still available despite there being 57 people watching it. The seller is open to offers so I reckon you could get this for under £1000. If the photos were better I think it would have sold a long time ago.
And if you want a pop of colour, how about this? It has some wear and tear but who hasn’t?
over £1000
If 70s space age style is your thing, how about this Don Chadwick designed modular system from Herman Miller? The seller has five pieces and they’re selling them separately. They’re also open to offers. Chic.
Back on the mid-century tip, this is a very elegant three seater.
G Plan has been mentioned by three people I’ve interviewed recently. Here’s an ex-display model in a lovely blue.
Money no object
Got a bit more cash to throw at the problem? I love this green Kashima from Ligne Roset. It’s giving Togo without being a Togo.
This Maralunga is a design classic which should always be in demand and therefore hold its value. That said, I have no idea if this is a good price in the current market. Do your due diligence before jumping.
Space no object
Would you look at this gorgeous 70s monstrosity? If you’ve a split level living space with a conversation pit in the middle, I think this set would be just perfect. Realistically, not many if us have a need for sixteen matching pieces of furniture. I’d suggest asking if the seller would consider splitting.
Of a similar vintage, there’s this amazing green suite. I’m in love.
That’s it. Well, this just scrapes the surface. There are thousands of secondhand sofas for sale in the UK alone. Seek and ye shall find.
Happy hunting.
