eBaywatch: Scandinavian glass
Category: Buy Secondhand
Prompted by the post about my glass sculptures I thought I’d share some glass items from the region that are currently listed on ebay. Like everything else I post from ebay, I’m no expert, these manufacturers are not intended to represent the best and this selection is certainly not definitive. So with all that arse-covering in mind, here are a few pieces that have caught my eye recently.
I’ve included some pieces that are listed in non-UK stores for reference, not because I’m suggesting you pay the delivery charges and import duties. That said, if you’re open to the extra expense then have at it, there’s much more available overseas.
So, let’s go…
This little vase really appeals. When I say little, I’m not kidding. Don’t be deceived by the mahoosive photo. This is just 11cm tall. Apparently it’s by Norwegian outfit Magnor. No idea of the date but it reminds me of some of Tamara Aladin’ s vases for Rhiihimaki in the 60s and 70s (see below).
From Lindshammars, the bunch who made the Arkitektur Glas I use for the sculptures, this is a triple tea light holder.
I love the simplicity of it, just like the cube candle holders that sometimes come up. Here’s a similar one by Urshult advertised in the US. There’s also a version that nests, again in the US.
Incidentally, the cubes come in a range of sizes. Gotta catch ‘em all.
Riihimaki/Riihimäen is always reliable if you like a spot of mid-century glassware. Save a search for Tamara Aladin, one of their principal designers during the 60s and 70s, and you won’t be disappointed. They seem to have made a pile of vases. Personal favourites are these hooped things that people often list as cog vases. I know of two variations. One with two bands, like this.
And a version with three, like this.
Both come up frequently on ebay UK so you shouldn’t have a problem grabbing one.
The Gulvvase (floor vase) series by Otto Brauer for Holmegaard was very popular a few years back. I get the impression it might be less popular now but that might just be me, Either way, it’s understandable that these became desirable as their design is catnip if you like like an angular, symmetrical mid-century silhouette.
This one appears to be legit, the dimensions correspond with this overview.
Due to their popularity, copies were produced (and still are, I suspect). According to the ebay write up, this English dupe may have been produced under licence. Whatever its provenance, it’s a bit tatty but who’s complaining at £15, possibly less (they’ll take offers).
Moving on to lighting, I really like this pendant lamp, also by Holmegaard.
Saving the best till last, and moving up to the 80s, look at this wall light. What a corker. I wish I had a reason to buy it:
That’s it for now. I hope this has given you some ideas.
Happy hunting!
